For someone that doesn’t go out fishing, I’ve done quite a few tessellations on the topic. I made a quick inventory, and it raises my eyebrows. Maybe I terribly appreciate those that go out there fishing for me. Mmmmm, salmon, smoked salmon! Halibut. Shrimp. Bro should move out here and be my supplier eh?
Nuu-Chah-Nulth whaler tessellation : While spending time with Qwaya Sam, carving the totem pole at VIU, Vancouver Island University, he told me stories about his previous life, as a fisherman off the coast. He also told me that his ancestors were the only tribe that went of hunting for whales. The third figure on the pole we carved was a Nuu-Chah-Nulth whaler.

Totem pole at Vancouver Island University, the Whaler is just above my head, holding a traditional harpoon.
Salmon tessellation : Free flowing around a drop of water, this tessellation was built using symmetry system P3. The salmon fishery is definitely an important local industry.

Have you seen the Size of his Crabs? All these reality shows about crab fishers off the northern Pacific coast. Sort of stays in your mind. Funny one in this case.

Fish Stories : Legends created at the shoreline, stories about the one that got away. The more the story is told, the larger the fish gets. It would be cool to have a shirt with a measuring tape printed from one sleeve to the other.

Ocean Spray Surf : Beautiful crashing waves releasing droplets. Forever to the horizon.

Carved Salmon Cascade : This was a test piece to do a transformation style tessellation and carve it at the back of the VIU totem pole. The top would have started as the braid behind the whaler’s head — to then transform into a Sisiutl, a double-headed sea serpent — and into a cascade of salmon. There is also the one token rabbit, as they do overrun the campus at VIU.
